The “material blender”

The basic concept of GALACTICO is the unique blend of the three most established integration materials (InP, GaAs, Si) on a common silicon-based platform.

The big pay-off from such a combination is the simultaneous addressing of high-performance, volume production and cost of next generation GbE transponders.

Silicon platform: The GALACTICO platform will offer cost-effectiveness and reliability due to the use of silicon material as well as the capability for dense integration of high performance compact passive components.

GaAs IQ modulators: The utilization of GaAs material will address volume production due to the available large 6-inch GaAs wafers. Furthermore, the GaAs modulators will exhibit a high degree of linearity, 30 GHz electro-optic bandwidth whilst requiring low driving voltages.

InP photodetectors: InP material will be used to integrate arrays of 40 GHz flip-chip compatible photodetectors providing optimum base-rate scalability of multi-GbE coherent receivers.

SiGe: Silicon fabrication techniques will be employed to develop high-speed SiGe HBT electronics including TIAs and new multi-level modulator drivers suitable for high-order QAM modulation. These electronic ICs will be integrated on-chip for driving active components. GALACTICO will also explore the possibility of optoelectronic integration with SiGe photodetectors in a common cost-effective BiCMOS process. GALACTICO will provide the necessary integration methodology for mounting all these components on-chip and will bring together photonics and electronics on the same silicon substrate.

GALACTICO showcases at ECOC 2011 exhibition. GALACTICO was exhibited at this year ECOC through the exhibition booths set-up by U2t, Constelex and NoE EURO-FOS. Device prototypes were displayed and project brochures were distributed to the conference visitors.

The GALACTICO concept and the first research results were presented at the recent 2011 Photonics Society Summer Topical Meetings held in Montreal. The presentation entitled: “The European Galactico Project: Coherent Terabit Ethernet Systems Using 4 μm Rib Waveguide Silicon-on-Insulator Technology and GaAs modulators” was part of the Terabit Optical Ethernet Topical Meeting.
